Myth #3: Adoption is accurately portrayed on Lifetime movies and TV shows.

Myth #3: Adoption is accurately portrayed on Lifetime movies and TV shows.

False. Adoption is often inaccurately portrayed in the drama of the media. Today, adoptions are stories of hope and blessing. In part, because we empower potential birth moms with knowledge, choice, and an open relationship with the adoptive family and the child. Don’t be convinced of anything you see on television or the news, much less let it shape your understanding of adoption today. Done correctly with love and compassion, it can be a beautiful relationship that gives hope.

So, there is much work to be done in illuminating the true beauty behind adoption. The beauty that lies in the sacrificial decision a birth mother has to place her child into the loving arms of another family. That placing a child for adoption is a brave, loving, and selfless decision. All around us are people, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family, whose lives have been forever changed by this brave love which sacrificed much to give the very best. Who do you know in your circles that has been touched by adoption?

The vision of New Life Adoptions is that instead of being shrouded in shame and secrecy, adoption can be celebrated as an incredible act of love and bravery, and we can make adoption a more explored path for women in unplanned pregnancies. But that takes all of us, from using positive adoption language, to being knowledgeable about adoption choices today, and supporting the organizations that support these women.
